January

01 to 20 - Folia de Reis (Religious Party): In Paraty, Folia de Reis starts December 8, day of Our Lady of Conception, and end January 20. During this period groups of guitar players and singers gather to recite traditional portuguese poetry that sing the birth of Jesus.

09 to 31 - Paraty Cultural: Paraty celebrates summer with live music and folklore.

08 - Carnamar: The Carnival of the Sea.

20 to 24 - Carnaval

21 - Traditional Bloco da Loma parade (”Muddy” Samba School Parade)

28 - Paraty Anyversary: City hall organises the celebrations.

05-12 Easter in Paraty is a traditionally Catholic city, the celebration of Easter traditions kept dating from the XVII century.

09- Procissão do Fogaréu, one of the highlights of easter is the procession, the faithful walk through the streets with flashlights, street lights off, and sounds of bells that transport us to other times.

11 - Corpus Christi: The most important is the procession. The decoration of the Historic Centre streets are beatufill, made with mats of various materials such as sawdust colored pigments, lime, flowers, coffee powder, etc.

11 to 14 Shrimp Festival (Ilha do Araújo) This is a festival created to raise funds for the Feast of São Pedro and São Paulo, the patron saint of fishermen. It also marks the end of shrimp season. Gastronomic delights served at the event or at cost are: Casadinho Shrimp, Shrimp and Strogonoff traditional Bobo.

19 to 21-Shrimp Festival (Praia Grande)

18 to 20 - Vl Paraty Dance: The program includes the presentation of professional dance groups, workshops, exhibitions and dance contest / competition shows.

26 to 30 - Saint Peter and Saint Paul Party (Ilha do Araújo)

July

01 to 05- Paraty International Literary Festival - FLIP. During the party, national and foreign writers submit their books and theories to the public as well as participate in meetings reserved for discussions between the writers.

Publicitary Editors Meeting: Contest for students of social communication, design and advertising and marketing from all over Brazil.

01 II Music Festival of Taritba

07 to 24 - Caiçara Meeting Culture: This event is to present aspects of local culture, along with the culture of the neighboring coastal cities, creating a network of interactions, seeking to safeguard the Caiçara culture.

20 to 23 - Pinga Festival (Cane Brandy): Established in the early eighties with the aim of rescuing and disclose paratiense product par excellence for over 300 years the three-day festival is one of the largest dedicated to the cane brandy in the country.

10 to 14 - Paraty in Focus: International festival of photography with different workshops, exhibitions and samples.

03 to 05 - III Ideas Workshop - National Evangelical Event in Paraty: A literary event, centered on the Word of God, who has known internationally as Paraty city to study and favors the study of the Bible. Evangelical literary event with all the action revolves around the Word. Interviews with authors, analysis of text books, workshops on biblical translations, seminars on biblical themes, plays, stories counters, etc.

09 to 12- II Internacional Cinema Festival Paraty

09 to 11- Ymaguaré: Myths and Legends - Native American Culture biblical themes, plays, stories counters, etc.

November

1 to 30 - V Gastronomy Party in Paraty: Come and taste special dishes created by local chefs during the whole month of November and also from chefs from differeny Brazilian states that will come to Paraty for this event.

06 to 15 - Our Lady of Rosary and Saint Benedict Party

18 to 21 >> VII Spring Festival

20 to 22- XI Black Culture meeting: Encounter of Black Culture sponsored by the Quilombo Campinho of Independence, located in Paraty. Black music, memory and poetry.

26 to 29- I Caiçara Gastronomy Festival: You can participate in this festival experimenting the meals created by chefs from local restaurants throughout the month of November.

December

15 - Christmas Season Opening

31 - New Year: At 23:00 pm, tourists and residents go to Praia do Pontal, where yo can enjoy live music and a beautiful presentation of fireworks. The party continues until dawn!

Coming From Rio de Janeiro

The Best option (210 km) from Rio de Janeiro straight to Paraty is thorugh Rio Santos Highway. Rio de Janeiro - 210 km - Paraty

There is an Alternative from Rio de Janeiro to Barra Mansa through Dutra. From Barra Mansa to Angra dos Reis through local road. From Angra to Paraty through Rodovia Rio Santos. Rio de Janeiro - Barra Mansa - Angra dos Reis - 100 km - Paraty

Coming From São Paulo

The Shortest option (290 km) is going From São Paulo to São José dos Campos through Dutra (or Ayrton Senna). In São José, you have to take the Rodovia dos Tamoios to Caraguatatuba. In Caraguatatuba take the Rio Santos to Paraty. São Paulo - 100 km - São José dos Campos - 80 km - Caraguatatuba - 110 km - Paraty.

There is an Option with less traffic. (300 km) You have to go From São Paulo to Taubaté through Dutra (or Ayrton Senna). In Taubaté take the Rodovia Oswaldo Cruz to Ubatuba. In Ubatuba take the Rio Santos to Paraty. São Paulo - 140 km - Taubaté - 90 km - Ubatuba - 70 km - Paraty

Option without traffic / Road possibly in bad conditions. (280 km): From São Paulo to Guaratinguetá through Dutra. From Guaratinguetá to Paraty through local road. Has 10 km of dirt road in the hills between Cunha and Paraty. Avoid this road on days with much rain. São Paulo - 140 km - Taubaté - 90 km - Ubatuba - 70 km - Paraty
